Imagine my joy when I discovered that one of my favourite series of books was continuing even after enormous problems with the author completing a six book deal. The last of the six was published, and I was more or less certain that would be the last I'd hear of the Myth books. Then I discovered this book at Amazon! The series is getting a new co-author in Jody Lynn Nye, and Robert Asprin is going to carry on writing about his hilarious world! Yay! I can't wait to read this, and Myth Alliances, their first novel together which has just been published.

The End

I was thrilled when I first heard Asprin was writing more Myth books, but this book made me wonder if it was such a good idea after all.

I found this collection of stories very contrived and a little too slapstick. I might go so far as to say it was soulless. Whether it was the newness of the partnership, or that Asprin has become disillusioned with his creations I don't know, but the narrative felt forced and unnatural. That being said, I did enjoy the stories but they weren't the continuation I was expecting, and hoping for.

I think part of the problem is that Nye has brought a whole new frame of reference to the equation, and though Asprin may be familiar with the references I wasn't. I wasn't used to feeling left out of the story. The three situations were also incredibly unoriginal, though some aspects of the stories were very cool. I loved the magic tricks used in the beauty competition in 'Myth Congeniality', and the shake down resolution in 'Myth-Calculations', but the story that was concluded in 'Myth-ter Right' just didn't satisfy me. I've waited so long to find out what happened, and it just wasn't good enough.

I really hope that this partnership works out, but I'm a little less hopeful than I was before. I really want more Myth books, but I want quality as well as quantity.
