In his black-walled fortress at Inuyama, the murderous warlord, Iida Sadamu, surveys his famous nightingale floor. Constructed with exquisite skill, it sings at the tread of each human foot. No assassin can cross it unheard.

Brought up in a remote  mountain village among the Hidden, a reclusive and spiritual people, young Takeo knows only the ways of peace. But, unknown to himself, the ability to be in two places at once, invisibility. When his life is saved by the mysterious Lord Otori Shigeru, Tekeo begins the journey that will lead him to his hidden destiny within the walls of Inuyama. It is a journey of revenge and treachery, honour and loyalty, beauty and magic, and the overwhelming passion of love.

Across the Nightingale Floor is a stunningly powerful story, a rare work of fiction that appeals equally to young readers and adults. Epic in its scope, brilliant in its imaginative vision, the mythical world of the Otori is unforgettable.

This is one of the BBC Big read books that I'm very much looking forward to. I'm a sucker for a fantasy world, as long as it's utterly developed and interesting to explore. That this has made it onto the list makes me think it'll be a really good read...and there's a sequel or two to continue the story should I really love it.
